अतिमात्र॒म् अवर्धन्त नो॒द् इव दि॒वम् अस्पृशन् ।
भृ॒गुं हिंसित्वा॒ सृ॒ञ्जया वैतहव्याः॒ प॒राभवन् ॥१॥
atimātrám avardhanta nód iva dívam aspr̥śan |
bhŕ̥guṃ hiṃsitvā́ sŕ̥ñjayā vaitahavyā́ḥ párābhavan ||1||
Они выросли сверх меры
(И) чуть не коснулись неба.
Навредив Бхригу,
Сринджайи (и) Вайтахавьи погибли.
The sons of Vitahavya, the Srinjayas, waxed exceeding strong.
They well-nigh touched the heavens, but they wronged Bhrigu
and were overthrown.
Beyond measure they waxed strong, just fell short of touching the heavens. When they infringed upon Bhrigu they perished, the Sriñgaya Vaitahavyas.
avś_05.019.02.
ये॒ बृह॒त्सामानम् आङ्गिरस॒म् आ॒र्पयन् ब्राह्मणं॒ ज॒नाः ।
पे॒त्वस् ते॒षाम् उभया॒दम् अ॒विस् तोका॒न्य् आवयत् ॥२॥
yé br̥hátsāmānam āṅgirasám ā́rpayan brāhmaṇáṃ jánāḥ |
pétvas téṣām ubhayā́dam ávis tokā́ny āvayat ||2||
Люди, которые напали на Брихатсамана
Из рода Ангирасов, брахмана, -
Козел с двумя рядами зубов, баран
Сожрали их потомков.
When men pierced Brihatsāman through, the Brāhman, son of
Angiras,
The ram with teeth in both his jaws, the sheep, devoured their
progeny.
The persons who pierced Brihatsāman, the descendant of Angiras, the Brāhmana — a ram with two rows of teeth, a sheep devoured their offspring.
avś_05.019.03.
ये॒ ब्राह्मणं॒ प्रत्य॒ष्ठीवन् ये॒ वास्मिञ् छुल्क॒म् ईषिरे॒ ।
अस्न॒स् ते म॒ध्ये कुल्या॒याः के॒शान् खा॒दन्त आसते ॥३॥
yé brāhmaṇáṃ pratyáṣṭhīvan yé vāsmiñ chulkám īṣiré |
asnás te mádhye kulyā́yāḥ kéśān khā́danta āsate ||3||
(Те), кто плюнул в брахмана Или кто харкнул в него, Сидят они посреди лужи крови, Жуя (свои) волосы.
If men have spat upon, or shot their rheum upon a Brāhman,
they.
Sit in the middle of a stream running with blood, devouring
hair.
They who spat upon the Brāhmana, who desired tribute from him, they sit in the middle of a pool of blood, chewing hair.
avś_05.019.04.
ब्रह्मगवी॒ पच्य॒माना या॒वत् सा॒भि॒ विज॒ङ्गहे ।
ते॒जो राष्ट्र॒स्य नि॒र् हन्ति न॒ वीरो॒ जायते वृ॒षा ॥४॥
brahmagavī́ pacyámānā yā́vat sā́bhí vijáṅgahe |
téjo rāṣṭrásya nír hanti ná vīró jāyate vŕ̥ṣā ||4||
Когда варится корова брахмана, По мере того как она погружается, Она уничтожает блеск царства. Мужественный герой не рождается (в нем).
While yet the Brāhman's cow which men are dressing quivers in
her throe:
She mars the kingdom's splendour: there no vigorous hero
springs to life.
The cow of the Brahman, when roasted, as far as she reaches does she destroy the lustre of the kingdom; no lusty hero is born (there).
avś_05.019.05.
क्रूर॒म् अस्या आश॒सनं तृष्टं॒ पिशित॒म् अस्यते ।
क्षीरं॒ य॒द् अस्याः पीय॒ते त॒द् वै॒ पितृ॒षु कि॒ल्बिषम् ॥५॥
krūrám asyā āśásanaṃ tr̥ṣṭáṃ piśitám asyate |
kṣīráṃ yád asyāḥ pīyáte tád vái pitŕ̥ṣu kílbiṣam ||5||
Болезненно ее разрезание.
Жесткое при еде (ее) разделанное мясо.
Когда пьют ее молоко,
Это, в самом деле, грех против отцов.
Terrible is her cutting-up: her bitter flesh is cast away,
And it is counted sin among the Fathers if her milk is drunk.
A cruel (sacrilegious) deed is her slaughter, her meat, when eaten, is sapless; when her milk is drunk, that surely is accounted a crime against the Fathers.
avś_05.019.06.
उग्रो॒ रा॒जा म॒न्यमानो ब्राह्मणं॒ यो॒ जि॒घत्सति ।
प॒रा त॒त् सिच्यते राष्ट्रं॒ ब्राह्मणो॒ य॒त्र जीय॒ते ॥६॥
ugró rā́jā mányamāno brāhmaṇáṃ yó jíghatsati |
párā tát sicyate rāṣṭráṃ brāhmaṇó yátra jīyáte ||6||
Какой царь, мнящий себя грозным,
Хочет сожрать брахмана, -
То царство растворяется, Где угнетают брахмана.
If any King who deems himself mighty would eat a Brāhman
up,
Rent and disrupted is that realm wherein a Brāhman is oppres-
sed.
When the king, weening himself mighty, desires to destroy the Brāhmana, then royal power is dissipated, where the Brāhmana is oppressed.
avś_05.019.07.
अष्टा॒पदी चतुरक्षी॒ च॒तुःश्रोत्रा च॒तुर्हनुः ।
द्व्या॑स्या द्वि॒जिह्वा भूत्वा॒ सा॒ राष्ट्र॒म् अ॒व धूनुते ब्रह्मज्य॒स्य ॥७॥
aṣṭā́padī caturakṣī́ cátuḥśrotrā cáturhanuḥ |
dvyā̀syā dvíjihvā bhūtvā́ sā́ rāṣṭrám áva dhūnute brahmajyásya ||7||
Став восьминогой, четырехглазой,
С четырьмя ушами, с четырьмя челюстями,
С двумя мордами, двумя языками,
Она стряхивает вниз царство угнетателя брахмана.
She grows eight-footed, and four-eyed, four-eared, four-jawed,
two-faced, two-tongued,
And shatters down the kingdom of the man who doth the
Brāhman wrong.
Becoming eight-footed, four-eyed, four-eared, four-jawed, two-mouthed, two-tongued, she dispels the rule of the oppressor of the Brahman.
avś_05.019.08.
त॒द् वै॒ राष्ट्र॒म् आ॒ स्रवति ना॒वं भिन्ना॒म् इवोदक॒म् ।
ब्रह्मा॒णं य॒त्र हिं॒सन्ति त॒द् राष्ट्रं॒ हन्ति दुछु॒ना ॥८॥
tád vái rāṣṭrám ā́ sravati nā́vaṃ bhinnā́m ivodakám |
brahmā́ṇaṃ yátra híṃsanti tád rāṣṭráṃ hanti duchúnā ||8||
И (все) это заливает царство,
Как вода - расколотую лодку.
Где вредят брахману,
То царство поражает несчастье.
As water swamps a leaky ship so ruin overflows that realm.
Misfortune smites the realm wherein a Brāhman suffers scath
and harm.
That (kingdom) surely she swamps, as water a leaking ship; misfortune strikes that kingdom, in which they injure a Brāhmana.
avś_05.019.09.
तं॒ वृक्षा॒ अ॒प सेधन्ति छायां॒ नो मो॒प गा इ॒ति ।
यो॒ ब्राह्मण॒स्य स॒द् ध॒नम् अभि॒ नारद म॒न्यते ॥९॥
táṃ vr̥kṣā́ ápa sedhanti chāyā́ṃ no mópa gā íti |
yó brāhmaṇásya sád dhánam abhí nārada mányate ||9||
Того прогоняют деревья, (говоря) так:
"Не приходи в нашу тень!" -
Кто замышляет против
Подлинного богатства брахмана, о Нарада.
The very trees repel the man, and drive him from their sheltering
shade,
Whoever claims, O Nārada, the treasure that a Brāhman owns.
The trees chase away with the words: 'do not come within our shade,' him who covets the wealth that belongs to a Brāhmana, O Nārada!
avś_05.019.10.
विष॒म् एत॒द् देव॒कृतं रा॒जा व॒रुणो ऽब्रवीत् ।
न॒ ब्राह्मण॒स्य गां॒ जग्ध्वा॒ रास्त्रे॒ जागार क॒श् चन॒ ॥१०॥
viṣám etád devákr̥taṃ rā́jā váruṇo 'bravīt |
ná brāhmaṇásya gā́ṃ jagdhvā́ rāstré jāgāra káś caná ||10||
Царь Вару на назвал
Это ядом, созданным богами. Сожравши корову брахмана, Никто не имеет власти в царстве.
That wealth, King Varuna hath said, is poison by the Gods
prepared.
None hath kept watch to guard his realm who hath devoured a
Brāhman's cow.
King Varuna pronounced this (to be) poison, prepared by the gods: no one who has devoured the cow of a Brāhmana retains the charge of a kingdom.
avś_05.019.11.
न॒वैव॒ ता॒ नवत॒यो या॒ भू॒मिर् व्य॑धूनुत ।
प्रजां॒ हिंसित्वा॒ ब्रा॒ह्मणीम् असंभव्यं॒ प॒राभवन् ॥११॥
návaivá tā́ navatáyo yā́ bhū́mir vyàdhūnuta |
prajā́ṃ hiṃsitvā́ brā́hmaṇīm asaṃbhavyáṃ párābhavan ||11||
Те самые девять по девяносто (человек), Которых земля стряхнула с себя, Причинив вред брахманскому потомству, Погибли безвозвратно.
Those nine-and-ninety people whom Earth shook and cast away
from her,
When they had wronged the Brāhman race were ruined incon-
ceivably.
Those full nine and ninety whom the earth did cast off, because they had injured the offspring of a Brāhmana, were ruined irretrievably.
avś_05.019.12.
या॒म् मृता॒यानुबध्न॒न्ति कूद्यं॑ पदयो॒पनीम् ।
त॒द् वै॒ ब्रह्मज्य ते देवा॒ उपस्त॒रणम् अब्रुवन् ॥१२॥
yā́m mr̥tā́yānubadhnánti kūdyàṃ padayópanīm |
tád vái brahmajya te devā́ upastáraṇam abruvan ||12||
(Растение) куди, стирающее следы, Которое привязывают к мертвому, Именно его, о угнетатель брахмана, Боги назвали твоей подстилкой.
Oppressor of the Brāhmans! thus the Gods have spoken and
declared,
The step-effacing wisp they bind upon the dead shall be thy
couch.
The kūdī-plant (Christ's thorn) that wipes away the track (of death), which they fasten to the dead, that very one, O oppressor of Brahmans, the gods did declare (to be) thy couch.
avś_05.019.13.
अ॒श्रूणि कृ॒पमानस्य या॒नि जीत॒स्य वावृतुः॒ ।
तं॒ वै॒ ब्रह्मज्य ते देवा॒ अपां॒ भाग॒म् अधारयन् ॥१३॥
áśrūṇi kŕ̥pamānasya yā́ni jītásya vāvr̥túḥ |
táṃ vái brahmajya te devā́ apā́ṃ bhāgám adhārayan ||13||
Слезы скорбящего,
Которые катились, когда его оскорбили,
Это как раз та доля воды,
О угнетатель брахмана, которую боги установили для тебя.
Oppressor of the Brāhmans! tears wept by the man who suffers
wrong,
These are the share of water which the Gods have destined to be
thine.
The tears which have rolled from (the eyes of) the oppressed (Brahman), as he laments, these very ones, O oppressor of Brahmans, the gods did assign to thee as thy share of water.
avś_05.019.14.
ये॒न मृतं॒ स्नप॒यन्ति श्म॒श्रूणि ये॒नोन्द॒ते ।
तं॒ वै॒ ब्रह्मज्य ते देवा॒ अपां॒ भाग॒म् अधारयन् ॥१४॥
yéna mr̥táṃ snapáyanti śmáśrūṇi yénondáte |
táṃ vái brahmajya te devā́ apā́ṃ bhāgám adhārayan ||14||
Чем омывают мертвого,
Чем смачивают (ему) бороду,
Это как раз та доля воды,
О угнетатель брахмана, которую боги установили для тебя.
The share of water which the Gods have destined to be thine, is
that,
Oppressor of the priest! wherewith men lave the corpse and wet
the beard.
The water with which they bathe the dead, with which they moisten his beard, that very one, O oppressor of Brahmans, the gods did assign to thee as thy share of water.
avś_05.019.15.
न॒ वर्षं॒ मैत्रावरुणं॒ ब्रह्मज्य॒म् अभि॒ वर्षति ।
ना॒स्मै स॒मितिः कल्पते न॒ मित्रं॒ नयते व॒शम् ॥१५॥
ná varṣáṃ maitrāvaruṇáṃ brahmajyám abhí varṣati |
nā́smai sámitiḥ kalpate ná mitráṃ nayate váśam ||15||
Дождь, посланный Митрой-Варуной,
Не падает на угнетателя брахмана.
Не подходит для него собрание.
Не направляет он друга по своей воле.
The rain of Mitra-Varuna falls not on him who wrongs the
priest.
To him no counsel brings success: he wins, no friend to do his
will.
The rain of Mitra and Varuna does not moisten the oppressor of Brahmans; the assembly is not complacent for him, he does not guide his friend according to his will.
