आ॒ रात्रि पा॒र्थिवं र॒जः पितु॒र् अप्रायि धा॒मभिः ।
दिवः॒ स॒दांसि बृहती॒ वि॒ तिष्ठस आ॒ त्वेषं॒ वर्तते त॒मः ॥१॥

ā́ rātri pā́rthivaṃ rájaḥ pitúr aprāyi dhā́mabhiḥ |
diváḥ sádāṃsi br̥hatī́ ví tiṣṭhasa ā́ tveṣáṃ vartate támaḥ ||1||

Night! the terrestrial realm hath been filled with the Father's
power and might.
Thou spreadest forth on high unto the seats of Heaven: dark-
ness that strikes with awe comes near.

avś_19.047.02.

न॒ य॒स्याः पारं॒ द॒दृशे न॒ यो॒युवद् वि॒श्वम् अस्यां॒ नि॒ विशते य॒द् ए॒जति ।
अ॒रिष्टासस् त उर्वि तमस्वति रा॒त्रि पार॒म् अशीमहि भ॒द्रे पार॒म् अशीमहि ॥२॥

ná yásyāḥ pāráṃ dádr̥śe ná yóyuvad víśvam asyā́ṃ ní viśate yád éjati |
áriṣṭāsas ta urvi tamasvati rā́tri pārám aśīmahi bhádre pārám aśīmahi ||2||

Each moving thing finds rest in her whose yonder boundary is
not seen, nor that which keeps her separate.
O spacious, darksome Night, may we uninjured reach the end of
thee, reach, O thou blessed One, thine end.

avś_19.047.03.

ये॒ ते रात्रि नृच॒क्षसो द्रष्टा॒रो नवति॒र् न॒व ।
अशीतिः॒ स॒न्त्य् अष्टा॒ उतो॒ ते सप्त॒ सप्ततिः॒ ॥३॥

yé te rātri nr̥cákṣaso draṣṭā́ro navatír náva |
aśītíḥ sánty aṣṭā́ utó te saptá saptatíḥ ||3||

Thy ninety-nine examiners, O Night, who look upon mankind,
Eighty-and-eight in number, or seven-and-seventy are they.

avś_19.047.04.

षष्टि॒श् च ष॒ट् च रेवति पञ्चाश॒त् प॒ञ्च सुम्नयि ।
चत्वा॒रश् चत्वारिंश॒च् च त्र॒यस् त्रिंश॒च् च वाजिनि ॥४॥

ṣaṣṭíś ca ṣáṭ ca revati pañcāśát páñca sumnayi |
catvā́raś catvāriṃśác ca tráyas triṃśác ca vājini ||4||

Sixty-and-six, O opulent, fifty-and-five, O happy One,
Forty-and-four and thirty-three are they, O thou enriched with
spoil.

avś_19.047.05.

द्वौ॒ च ते विंशति॒श् च ते रा॒त्र्य् ए॒कादशावमाः॒ ।
ते॒भिर् नो अद्य॒ पायु॒भिर् नु॒ पाहि दुहितर् दिवः ॥५॥

dváu ca te viṃśatíś ca te rā́try ékādaśāvamā́ḥ |
tébhir no adyá pāyúbhir nú pāhi duhitar divaḥ ||5||

Twenty-and-two hast thou, O Night, eleven, yea, and fewer still.
With these protectors guard us well. O Daughter of the Sky, to-
day.

avś_19.047.06.

र॒क्षा मा॒किर् नो अघ॒शंस ईशत मा॒ नो दुःशं॒स ईशत ।
मा॒ नो अद्य॒ ग॒वां स्तेनो॒ मा॒वीनां वृ॒क ईशत ॥६॥

rákṣā mā́kir no agháśaṃsa īśata mā́ no duḥśáṃsa īśata |
mā́ no adyá gávāṃ stenó mā́vīnāṃ vŕ̥ka īśata ||6||

Let not a fiends or spiteful man, let no ill-wisher master us.
Let not the robber seize our cows, nor the wolf take our sheep
today.

avś_19.047.07.

मा॒श्वानां भद्रे त॒स्करो मा॒ नृणां॒ यातुधान्यः॑ ।
परमे॒भिः पथि॒भि स्तेनो॒ धावतु त॒स्करः ।
प॒रेण दत्व॒ती र॒ज्जुः प॒रेणाघायु॒र् अर्षतु ॥७॥

mā́śvānāṃ bhadre táskaro mā́ nr̥ṇā́ṃ yātudhānyàḥ |
paramébhiḥ pathíbhi stenó dhāvatu táskaraḥ |
páreṇa datvátī rájjuḥ páreṇāghāyúr arṣatu ||7||

Let not the thief, O Blessed, seize our horses, nor she-fiends our
men.
Let thief and robber run away on pathways most remote from
us.

avś_19.047.08.

अ॒ध रात्रि तृष्ट॒धूमम् अशीर्षा॒णम् अ॒हिं कृणु ।
ह॒नू वृ॒कस्य जम्भ॒या स्तेनं॒ द्रुपदे॒ जहि ॥८॥

ádha rātri tr̥ṣṭádhūmam aśīrṣā́ṇam áhiṃ kr̥ṇu |
hánū vŕ̥kasya jambháyā stenáṃ drupadé jahi ||8||

Far from us let Rope with Fangs, far from us let the wicked
flee.
Do thou make blind and headless. Night, the serpent with his
pungent breath.

avś_19.047.09.

त्व॒यि रात्रि वसामसि स्वपिष्या॒मसि जागृहि॒ ।
गो॒भ्यो नः श॒र्म यछा॒श्वेभ्यः पु॒रुषेभ्यः ॥९॥

tváyi rātri vasāmasi svapiṣyā́masi jāgr̥hí |
góbhyo naḥ śárma yachā́śvebhyaḥ púruṣebhyaḥ ||9||

Crush the wolf's jaws in pieces, strike the robber dead against a
post.
In thee, O Night, do we abide: we here will sleep. Be watchful
thou.
Give thou protection to our kine; and to our horses, and our
men.
