अ॒ध रात्रि तृष्ट॒धूमम् अशीर्षा॒णम् अ॒हिं कृणु ।
अक्षौ॒ वृ॒कस्य नि॒र् जह्यास् ते॒न तं॒ द्रुपदे॒ जहि ॥१॥

ádha rātri tr̥ṣṭádhūmam aśīrṣā́ṇam áhiṃ kr̥ṇu |
akṣáu vŕ̥kasya nír jahyās téna táṃ drupadé jahi ||1||

Blind him and make him headless, Night! the serpent with the
pungent breath.
Strike from his head the wolf's two eyes, and dash the thief
against a post.

ये॒ ते रात्र्य् अनड्वा॒हस् तीक्ष्ण॒शृङ्गाः स्वाश॒वः ।
ते॒भिर् नो अद्य॒ पारया॒ति दुर्गा॒णि विश्व॒हा ॥२॥

yé te rātry anaḍvā́has tīkṣṇáśr̥ṅgāḥ svāśávaḥ |
tébhir no adyá pārayā́ti durgā́ṇi viśváhā ||2||

Those oxen that are thine, O Night, with sharpened horns and
rapid pace,
With those transport us safe to-day o'er difficulties everywhere.

रा॒त्रिंरात्रिम् अ॒रिष्यन्तस् त॒रेम तन्वा॑ वय॒म् ।
गम्भीर॒म् अ॒प्लवा इव न॒ तरेयुर् अ॒रातयः ॥३॥

rā́triṃrātrim áriṣyantas tárema tanvā̀ vayám |
gambhīrám áplavā iva ná tareyur árātayaḥ ||3||

Uninjured in our bodies may we pass through each succeeding
night,
And let malignities fail to pass, as men without a boat the depth.

avś_19.050.04.

य॒था शाम्या॒कः प्रप॒तन्न् अपवा॒न् ना॒नुविद्य॒ते ।
एवा॒ रात्रि प्र॒ पातय यो॒ अस्मां॒ अभ्यघाय॒ति ॥४॥

yáthā śāmyā́kaḥ prapátann apavā́n nā́nuvidyáte |
evā́ rātri prá pātaya yó asmā́m̐ abhyaghāyáti ||4||

As millet hurried through the air before us is beheld no more.
So cause the man to vanish, Night, who plans to do us injury.

अ॒प स्तेनं॒ वा॒सयो गोअज॒म् उत॒ त॒स्करम् ।
अ॒थो यो॒ अ॒र्वतः शि॒रो ऽभिधा॒य नि॒नीषति ॥५॥

ápa stenáṃ vā́sayo goajám utá táskaram |
átho yó árvataḥ śíro 'bhidhā́ya nínīṣati ||5||

The thief hast thou kept far away, the robber driver of our kine.
Even him who having covered up the horse's head would lead
him off.

avś_19.050.06.

य॒द् अद्य॒ रात्रि सुभगे विभ॒जन्त्य् अ॒यो व॒सु ।
य॒द् एत॒द् अस्मा॒न् भो॒जय य॒थे॒द् अन्या॒न् उपा॒यसि ॥६॥

yád adyá rātri subhage vibhájanty áyo vásu |
yád etád asmā́n bhójaya yáthéd anyā́n upā́yasi ||6||

If dealing treasure thou hast come to-day, O highly favoured
Night.
Cause thou us to enjoy it all so that this may not pass away.

avś_19.050.07.

उष॒से नः प॒रि देहि स॒र्वान् रात्र्य् अनाग॒सः ।
उषा॒ नो अ॒ह्ने आ॒ भजाद् अ॒हस् तु॒भ्यं विभावरि ॥७॥

uṣáse naḥ pári dehi sárvān rātry anāgásaḥ |
uṣā́ no áhne ā́ bhajād áhas túbhyaṃ vibhāvari ||7||

Do thou entrust us to the Dawn, all of us free from sin, O
Night.
May Dawn deliver us to Day, and Day to thee, O glorious One.
