कालो॒ अ॒श्वो वहति सप्त॒रश्मिः सहस्राक्षो॒ अज॒रो भू॒रिरेताः ।
त॒म् आ॒ रोहन्ति कव॒यो विपश्चि॒तस् त॒स्य चक्रा॒ भु॒वनानि वि॒श्वा ॥१॥

kāló áśvo vahati saptáraśmiḥ sahasrākṣó ajáro bhū́riretāḥ |
tám ā́ rohanti kaváyo vipaścítas tásya cakrā́ bhúvanāni víśvā ||1||

Prolific, thousand-eyed, and undecaying, a horse with seven
reins Time bears us onward.
Sages inspired with holy knowledge mount him: his chariot
wheels are all the worlds of creatures.

Time, the steed, runs with seven reins (rays), thousand-eyed, ageless, rich in seed. The seers, thinking holy thoughts, mount him, all the beings (worlds) are his wheels.

avś_19.053.02.

सप्त॒ चक्रा॒न् वहति काल॒ एष॒ सप्ता॒स्य ना॒भीर् अमृ॒तं न्व् अ॒क्षः ।
स॒ इमा॒ वि॒श्वा भु॒वनान्य् अञ्जत् कालः॒ स॒ ईयते प्रथमो॒ नु॒ देवः॒ ॥२॥

saptá cakrā́n vahati kālá eṣá saptā́sya nā́bhīr amŕ̥taṃ nv ákṣaḥ |
sá imā́ víśvā bhúvanāny añjat kāláḥ sá īyate prathamó nú deváḥ ||2||

This Time hath seven rolling wheels and seven naves immorality
is the chariot's axle.
This Time brings hitherward all worlds about us: as primal
Deity is he entreated.

With seven wheels does this Time ride, seven naves has he, immortality is his axle. He carries hither all these beings (worlds). Time, the first god, now hastens onward.

avś_19.053.03.

पूर्णः॒ कुम्भो॒ ऽधि काल॒ आ॒हितस् तं॒ वै॒ प॒श्यामो बहुधा॒ नु॒ स॒न्तम् ।
स॒ इमा॒ वि॒श्वा भु॒वनानि प्रत्य॒ङ् कालं॒ त॒म् आहुः॒ परमे॒ व्यो॑मन् ॥३॥

pūrṇáḥ kumbhó 'dhi kālá ā́hitas táṃ vái páśyāmo bahudhā́ nú sántam |
sá imā́ víśvā bhúvanāni pratyáṅ kāláṃ tám āhúḥ paramé vyòman ||3||

On Time is laid an overflowing beaker: this we behold in many
a place appearing.
He carries from us all these worlds of creatures. They call him
Kāla in the loftiest heaven.

A full jar has been placed upon Time; him, verily, we see existing in many forms. He carries away all these beings (worlds); they call him Time in the highest heaven.

avś_19.053.04.

स॒ एव॒ सं॒ भु॒वनान्य् आ॒भरत् स॒ एव॒ सं॒ भु॒वनानि प॒र्य् ऐत् ।
पिता॒ स॒न्न् अभवत् पुत्र॒ एषां त॒स्माद् वै॒ ना॒न्य॒त् प॒रम् अस्ति ते॒जः ॥४॥

sá evá sáṃ bhúvanāny ā́bharat sá evá sáṃ bhúvanāni páry ait |
pitā́ sánn abhavat putrá eṣāṃ tásmād vái nā́nyát páram asti téjaḥ ||4||

He only made the worlds of life, he only gathered the worlds
of living things together.
Their son did he become who was their Father: no other higher
power than he existeth.

He surely did bring hither all the beings (worlds), he surely did encompass all the beings (worlds). Being their father, he became their son; there is, verily, no other force, higher than he.

avś_19.053.05.

कालो॒ ऽमूं॒ दि॒वम् अजनयत् काल॒ इमाः॒ पृथिवी॒र् उत॒ ।
काले॒ ह भूतं॒ भ॒व्यं चेषितं॒ ह वि॒ तिष्ठते ॥५॥

kāló 'mū́ṃ dívam ajanayat kālá imā́ḥ pr̥thivī́r utá |
kālé ha bhūtáṃ bhávyaṃ ceṣitáṃ ha ví tiṣṭhate ||5||

Kāla created yonder heaven, and Kāla made these realms of
earth.
By Kāla, stirred to motion, both what is and what shall be
expand.

Time begot yonder heaven, Time also (begot) these earths. That which was, and that which shall be, urged forth by Time, spreads out.

avś_19.053.06.

कालो॒ भूति॒म् असृजत काले॒ त॒पति सू॒र्यः ।
काले॒ ह वि॒श्वा भूता॒नि काले॒ च॒क्षुर् वि॒ पश्यति ॥६॥

kāló bhūtím asr̥jata kālé tápati sū́ryaḥ |
kālé ha víśvā bhūtā́ni kālé cákṣur ví paśyati ||6||

Kāla created land; the Sun in Kāla hath his light and heat.
In Kāla rest all things that be: in Kāla doth the eye discern.

Time created the earth, in Time the sun burns. In Time are all beings, in Time the eye looks abroad.

avś_19.053.07.

काले॒ म॒नः काले॒ प्राणः॒ काले॒ ना॒म समा॒हितम् ।
काले॒न स॒र्वा नन्दन्त्य् आ॒गतेन प्रजा॒ इमाः॒ ॥७॥

kālé mánaḥ kālé prāṇáḥ kālé nā́ma samā́hitam |
kāléna sárvā nandanty ā́gatena prajā́ imā́ḥ ||7||

In Kāla mind, in Kāla breath, in Kāla name are fixt and joined.
These living creatures, one and all, rejoice when Kāla hath
approached.

In Time mind is fixed, in Time breath (is fixed), in Time names (are fixed); when Time has arrived all these creatures rejoice.

avś_19.053.08.

काले॒ त॒पः काले॒ ज्ये॒ष्ठम् काले॒ ब्र॒ह्म समा॒हितम् ।
कालो॒ ह स॒र्वस्येश्वरो॒ यः॒ पिता॒सीत् प्रजा॒पतेः ॥८॥

kālé tápaḥ kālé jyéṣṭham kālé bráhma samā́hitam |
kāló ha sárvasyeśvaró yáḥ pitā́sīt prajā́pateḥ ||8||

Kāla embraces Holy Fire, the Highest, Brahma in himself.
Yea, Kāla, who was father of Prajāpati, is Lord of All.

In Time tapas (creative fervour) is fixed; in Time the highest (being is fixed); in Time brahma (spiritual exaltation) is fixed; Time is the lord of everything, he was the father of Pragāpati.

avś_19.053.09.

ते॒नेषितं॒ ते॒न जातं॒ त॒द् उ त॒स्मिन् प्र॒तिष्ठितम् ।
कालो॒ ह ब्र॒ह्म भूत्वा॒ बि॒भर्ति परमेष्ठि॒नम् ॥९॥

téneṣitáṃ téna jātáṃ tád u tásmin prátiṣṭhitam |
kāló ha bráhma bhūtvā́ bíbharti parameṣṭhínam ||9||

He made, he stirred this universe to motion, and on him it rests.
He, Kāla, having now become Brahma, holds Parameshthin up.

By him this (universe) was urged forth, by him it was begotten, and upon him this (universe) was founded. Time, truly, having become the brahma (spiritual exaltation), supports Parameshthin (the highest lord).

avś_19.053.10.

कालः॒ प्रजा॒ असृजत कालो॒ अ॒ग्रे प्रजा॒पतिम् ।
स्वयंभूः॒ कश्य॒पः काला॒त् त॒पः काला॒द् अजायत ॥१०॥

kāláḥ prajā́ asr̥jata kāló ágre prajā́patim |
svayaṃbhū́ḥ kaśyápaḥ kālā́t tápaḥ kālā́d ajāyata ||10||

Kāla created living things and, first of all, Prajāpati.
From Kāla self-made Kasyapa, from Kāla Holy Fire was born.

Time created the creatures (pragāh), and Time in the beginning (created) the lord of creatures (Prāgapati); the self-existing Kasyapa and the tapas (creative fervour) from Time were born.
