यो॒ जात॒ एव॒ प्रथमो॒ म॒नस्वान् देवो॒ देवा॒न् क्र॒तुना पर्य॒मूषत् ।
य॒स्य शु॒ष्माद् रो॒दसी अ॒भ्यसेतां नृम्ण॒स्य मह्ना॒ स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥१॥
yó jātá evá prathamó mánasvān devó devā́n krátunā paryámūṣat |
yásya śúṣmād ródasī ábhyasetāṃ nr̥mṇásya mahnā́ sá janāsa índraḥ ||1||
He who just born, chief God of lofty spirit, by power and might
became the God's protector,
Before whose breath, through greatness of his valour, the two
worlds trembled, He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.02.
यः॒ पृथिवीं॒ व्य॒थमानाम् अ॒दृंहद् यः॒ प॒र्वतान् प्र॒कुपितां अ॒रम्णात् ।
यो॒ अन्त॒रिक्षं विममे॒ व॒रीयो यो॒ द्याम् अ॒स्तभ्नात् स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥२॥
yáḥ pr̥thivī́ṃ vyáthamānām ádr̥ṃhad yáḥ párvatān prákupitām̐ áramṇāt |
yó antárikṣaṃ vimamé várīyo yó dyām ástabhnāt sá janāsa índraḥ ||2||
He who fixed fast and firm the earth that staggered, and set at
rest the agitated mountains,
Who measured out air's wider middle region and gave the
heaven support, He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.03.
यो॒ हत्वा॒हिम् अ॒रिणात् सप्त॒ सि॒न्धून् यो॒ गा॒ उदा॒जद् अपधा॒ वल॒स्य ।
यो॒ अ॒श्मनोर् अन्त॒र् अग्निं॒ जजान संवृ॒क् सम॒त्सु स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥३॥
yó hatvā́him áriṇāt saptá síndhūn yó gā́ udā́jad apadhā́ valásya |
yó áśmanor antár agníṃ jajāna saṃvŕ̥k samátsu sá janāsa índraḥ ||3||
Who slew the Dragon, freed the Seven Rivers, and draye the
kine forth from the cave of Vala,
Begat the fire between both stones, the spoiler in warrior's
battle, He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.04.
ये॒नेमा॒ वि॒श्वा च्य॒वना कृता॒नि यो॒ दा॒सं व॒र्णम् अ॒धरं गु॒हा॒कः ।
श्वघ्नी॒व यो॒ जिगीवां॒ लक्ष॒म् आ॒दद् अर्यः॒ पुष्टा॒नि स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥४॥
yénemā́ víśvā cyávanā kr̥tā́ni yó dā́saṃ várṇam ádharaṃ gúhā́kaḥ |
śvaghnī́va yó jigīvā́ṃ lakṣám ā́dad aryáḥ puṣṭā́ni sá janāsa índraḥ ||4||
By whom this universe was made to tremble, who chased away
the humbled brood of demon,
Who, like a gambler gathering his winnings, seized the foe's
riches, He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.05.
यं॒ स्मा पृछ॒न्ति कु॒ह से॒ति घोर॒म् उते॒म् आहुर् नै॒षो॒ अस्ती॒त्य् एनम् ।
सो॒ अर्यः॒ पुष्टी॒र् वि॒ज इवा॒ मिनाति श्र॒द् अस्मै धत्त स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥५॥
yáṃ smā pr̥chánti kúha séti ghorám utém āhur náiṣó astī́ty enam |
só aryáḥ puṣṭī́r víja ivā́ mināti śrád asmai dhatta sá janāsa índraḥ ||5||
Of whom, the terrible, they ask, Where is He? or verily they
say of him, He is not.
He wastes the foeman's wealth like stakes of gamblers. Have
faith in him for He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.06.
यो॒ रध्र॒स्य चोदिता॒ यः॒ कृश॒स्य यो॒ ब्रह्म॒णो ना॒धमानस्य कीरेः॒ ।
युक्त॒ग्राव्णो यो॒ ऽविता॒ सुशिप्रः॒ सुत॒सोमस्य स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥६॥
yó radhrásya coditā́ yáḥ kr̥śásya yó brahmáṇo nā́dhamānasya kīréḥ |
yuktágrāvṇo yó 'vitā́ suśipráḥ sutásomasya sá janāsa índraḥ ||6||
Stirrer to action of the poor and lowly, of priest, of suppliant
who sings his praises
Who, fair-faced, favours him who presseth Soma with stones
adjusted, He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.07.
य॒स्या॒श्वासः प्रदि॒शि य॒स्य गा॒वो य॒स्य ग्रा॒मा य॒स्य वि॒श्वे र॒थासः ।
यः॒ सू॒र्यं य॒ उष॒सं जजा॒न यो॒ अपां॒ नेता॒ स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥७॥
yásyā́śvāsaḥ pradíśi yásya gā́vo yásya grā́mā yásya víśve ráthāsaḥ |
yáḥ sū́ryaṃ yá uṣásaṃ jajā́na yó apā́ṃ netā́ sá janāsa índraḥ ||7||
He under whose supreme control are horses, all chariots, and
the hamlets, and the cattle:
He who begat the Sun, begat the Morning, leader of waters.
He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.08.
यं॒ क्र॒न्दसी संयती॒ विह्व॒येते प॒रे॒ ऽवरे उभ॒या अमि॒त्राः ।
समानं॒ चिद् र॒थम् आतस्थिवां॒सा ना॒ना हवेते स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥८॥
yáṃ krándasī saṃyatī́ vihváyete páré 'vare ubháyā amítrāḥ |
samānáṃ cid rátham ātasthivā́ṃsā nā́nā havete sá janāsa índraḥ ||8||
To whom both armies cry in close encounter, foe against foe, the
stronger and the weaker;
Whom two invoke upon one chariot mounted, each for himself,
He, O ye men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.09.
य॒स्मान् न॒ ऋते॒ विज॒यन्ते ज॒नासो यं॒ यु॒ध्यमाना अ॒वसे ह॒वन्ते ।
यो॒ वि॒श्वस्य प्रतिमा॒नं बभू॒व यो॒ अच्युतच्यु॒त् स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥९॥
yásmān ná r̥té vijáyante jánāso yáṃ yúdhyamānā ávase hávante |
yó víśvasya pratimā́naṃ babhū́va yó acyutacyút sá janāsa índraḥ ||9||
He, without whom men conquer not in battle, whom, warring,
they invoke for help and succour;
He, all this universe's type and image, who shakes what never
shook, He, men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.10.
यः॒ श॒स्वतो म॒ह्य् एनो द॒धानान् अ॒मन्यमानां छ॒र्वा जघा॒न ।
यः॒ श॒र्धते ना॒नुद॒दाति शृध्यां॒ यो॒ द॒स्योर् हन्ता॒ स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥१०॥
yáḥ śásvato máhy eno dádhānān ámanyamānāṃ chárvā jaghā́na |
yáḥ śárdhate nā́nudádāti śr̥dhyā́ṃ yó dásyor hantā́ sá janāsa índraḥ ||10||
He who hath smitten, ere they know their danger, with his hurl-
ed weapon many grievous sinners:
Who pardons not his boldness who provokes him, who slays the
Dasyu, He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.11.
यः॒ श॒म्भरं प॒र्वतेषु क्षिय॒न्तं चत्वारिंश्यां॒ शर॒द्य् अन्व॒विन्दत् ।
ओजाय॒मानं यो॒ अ॒हिं जघा॒न दा॒नुं श॒यानं स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥११॥
yáḥ śámbharaṃ párvateṣu kṣiyántaṃ catvāriṃśyā́ṃ śarády anvávindat |
ojāyámānaṃ yó áhiṃ jaghā́na dā́nuṃ śáyānaṃ sá janāsa índraḥ ||11||
He who discovered in the fortieth autumn Sambara dwelling in
the midst of mountains:
Who slew the Dragon putting forth his vigour, the demon lying
there, He, men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.12.
यः॒ शम्भरं पर्य॒तरत् क॒सीभिर् यो॒ ऽचारुकास्ना॒पिबत् सुत॒स्य ।
अन्त॒र् गिरौ॒ य॒जमानं बहुं॒ ज॒नं य॒स्मिन्न् आ॒मूर्छत् स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥१२॥
yáḥ śambharaṃ paryátarat kásībhir yó 'cārukāsnā́pibat sutásya |
antár giráu yájamānaṃ bahúṃ jánaṃ yásminn ā́mūrchat sá janāsa índraḥ ||12||
Who drank the juice poured at the seas of Order, subduing
Sambara by superior prowess,
Who hoarded food within the mountain's hollow wherein he
grew in strength, He, men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.13.
यः॒ सप्त॒रश्मिर् वृषभ॒स् तु॒विष्मान् अवा॒सृजत् स॒र्तवे सप्त॒ सि॒न्धून् ।
यो॒ रौहिण॒म् अ॒स्फुरद् व॒ज्रबाहुर् द्या॒म् आरो॒हन्तं स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥१३॥
yáḥ saptáraśmir vr̥ṣabhás túviṣmān avā́sr̥jat sártave saptá síndhūn |
yó rauhiṇám ásphurad vájrabāhur dyā́m āróhantaṃ sá janāsa índraḥ ||13||
Who, with seven guiding reins, the Bull, the mighty, set the
Seven Rivers free to flow at pleasure;
Who, thunder-armed, rent Rauhina in pieces when scaling
heaven, He, O ye men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.14.
द्या॒वा चिद् अस्मै पृथिवी॒ ममेते शु॒ष्माच् चिद् अस्य प॒र्वता भयन्ते ।
यः॒ सोमपा॒ निचितो॒ व॒ज्रबाहुर् यो॒ व॒ज्रहस्तः स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥१४॥
dyā́vā cid asmai pr̥thivī́ mamete śúṣmāc cid asya párvatā bhayante |
yáḥ somapā́ nicitó vájrabāhur yó vájrahastaḥ sá janāsa índraḥ ||14||
Heaven, even, and the earth bow down before him, before his
very breath the mountains tremble.
Known as the Soma-drinker, armed with thunder, the wielder
of the bolt, He, men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.15.
यः॒ सुन्व॒न्तम् अ॒वति यः॒ प॒चन्तं यः॒ शं॒सन्तं यः॒ शशमान॒म् ऊती॒ ।
य॒स्य ब्र॒ह्म व॒र्धनं य॒स्य सो॒मो य॒स्येदं॒ रा॒धः स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥१५॥
yáḥ sunvántam ávati yáḥ pácantaṃ yáḥ śáṃsantaṃ yáḥ śaśamānám ūtī́ |
yásya bráhma várdhanaṃ yásya sómo yásyedáṃ rā́dhaḥ sá janāsa índraḥ ||15||
Who aids with favour him who pours the Soma, and him who
brews it, sacrificer, singer;
Whose strength our prayer and offered Soma heighten, and this
our gift, He, O ye men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.16.
जातो॒ व्य् अ॑ख्यत् पित्रो॒र् उप॒स्थे भु॒वो न॒ वेद जनितुः॒ प॒रस्य ।
स्तविष्य॒माणो नो॒ यो॒ अस्म॒द् व्रता॒ देवा॒नां स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥१६॥
jātó vy àkhyat pitrór upásthe bhúvo ná veda janitúḥ párasya |
staviṣyámāṇo nó yó asmád vratā́ devā́nāṃ sá janāsa índraḥ ||16||
Born, manifested in his Parents' bosom, He knoweth as a son
the Highest Father.
He who with vigorous energy assisted the companies of Gods,
He, men, is Indra
avś_20.034.17.
यः॒ सो॒मकामो ह॒र्यश्वः सूरि॒र् य॒स्माद् रे॒जन्ते भु॒वनानि वि॒श्वा ।
यो॒ जघा॒न श॒म्बरं य॒श् च शु॒ष्णं य॒ एकवीरः॒ स॒ जनास इ॒न्द्रः ॥१७॥
yáḥ sómakāmo háryaśvaḥ sūrír yásmād réjante bhúvanāni víśvā |
yó jaghā́na śámbaraṃ yáś ca śúṣṇaṃ yá ekavīráḥ sá janāsa índraḥ ||17||
Lord of Bay steeds, who loves the flowing Soma, He before
whom all living creatures tremble.
He who smote Sambara and slaughtered Sushna, He the Sole
Hero, He, O men, is Indra.
avś_20.034.18.
यः॒ सुन्वते॒ प॒चते दुध्र॒ आ॒ चिद् वा॒जं द॒र्दर्षि स॒ कि॒लासि सत्यः॒ ।
वयं॒ त इन्द्र विश्व॒ह प्रिया॒सः सुवी॒रासो विद॒थम् आ॒ वदेम ॥१८॥
yáḥ sunvaté pácate dudhrá ā́ cid vā́jaṃ dárdarṣi sá kílāsi satyáḥ |
vayáṃ ta indra viśváha priyā́saḥ suvī́rāso vidátham ā́ vadema ||18||
Thou verily art true strong God who sendest wealth to the man
who brews and pours libation.
So may we evermore, thy friends, O Indra, address the synod
with brave sons about us.
