यः॒ सभे॒यो विदथ्यः॑ सुत्वा॒ यज्वा॒थ पू॒रुषः ।
सू॒र्यं चा॒मू रिशा॒द॒सस् त॒द् देवाः॒ प्रा॒ग् अकल्पयन् ॥१॥

yáḥ sabhéyo vidathyàḥ sutvā́ yajvā́tha pū́ruṣaḥ |
sū́ryaṃ cā́mū riśā́dásas tád devā́ḥ prā́g akalpayan ||1||

The worshipper who pours the juice, for gathering and assembly
fit,
And yonder foe-destroying Sun,—these have the Gods designed
of old.

यो॒ जाम्या॒ अ॒प्रथयस् त॒द् य॒त् स॒खायं दु॒धूर्षति ।
ज्ये॒ष्ठो य॒द् अप्रचेतास् त॒द् आहुर् अ॒धराग् इ॒ति ॥२॥

yó jāmyā́ áprathayas tád yát sákhāyaṃ dúdhūrṣati |
jyéṣṭho yád apracetās tád āhur ádharāg íti ||2||

He who defiles a sister, he who willingly would harm a friend,
The fool who slights his elder, these, they say, must suffer down.

य॒द् भद्र॒स्य पु॒रुषस्य पुत्रो॒ भवति दाधृषिः॒ ।
त॒द् विप्रो॒ अ॒ब्रवीद् उ त॒द् गन्धर्वः॒ का॒म्यं व॒चः ॥३॥

yád bhadrásya púruṣasya putró bhavati dādhr̥ṣíḥ |
tád vipró ábravīd u tád gandharváḥ kā́myaṃ vácaḥ ||3||

Whenever any good man's son becometh bold and spirited,
Then hath the wise Gandharva said this pleasant upward-point-
ing word.

य॒श्च पणि॒ र॒घुजिष्ठ्यो॒ य॒श्च देवां॒ अ॒दाशुरिः ।
धी॒राणां श॒श्वताम् अहं॒ त॒द् अपाग् इ॒ति शुश्रुम ॥४॥

yáśca paṇí rághujiṣṭhyó yáśca devā́m̐ ádāśuriḥ |
dhī́rāṇāṃ śáśvatām aháṃ tád apāg íti śuśruma ||4||

The most unprofitable churl, the wealthy men who brings no.
gift,
These, verily, as we have heard, are cast away by all the wise.

avś_20.128.05.

ये॒ च देवा॒ अ॒यजन्ता॒थो ये॒ च पराददिः॒ ।
सू॒र्यो दि॒वम् इव गत्वा॒य मघ॒वा नो वि॒ रप्शते ॥५॥

yé ca devā́ áyajantā́tho yé ca parādadíḥ |
sū́ryo dívam iva gatvā́ya maghávā no ví rapśate ||5||

But they who have adored the Gods, and they who have best-
owed their gifts,
Those liberal lords are filled with wealth like Sūrya risen up to
heaven.

यो॒ऽनाक्ता॒क्षो अनभ्यक्तो॒ अ॒मणिवो॒ अ॒हिरण्य॒वः ।
अ॒ब्रह्मा ब्र॒ह्मणः पुत्र॒स्तोता॒ क॒ल्पेषु संमि॒ता ॥६॥

yó'nāktā́kṣo anabhyaktó ámaṇivó áhiraṇyávaḥ |
ábrahmā bráhmaṇaḥ putrástotā́ kálpeṣu saṃmítā ||6||

With unanointed eyes and limbs, wearing no gem or ring of
gold.
No priest, no Brāhman's son is he: these things are ordered in
the rules.

avś_20.128.07.

य॒ आक्ता॒क्षः सुभ्यक्तः॒ सु॒मणिः सु॒हिरण्य॒वः ।
सु॒ब्रह्मा ब्र॒ह्मणः पुत्र॒स्तोता॒ क॒ल्पेषु संमि॒ता ॥७॥

yá āktā́kṣaḥ subhyaktáḥ súmaṇiḥ súhiraṇyávaḥ |
súbrahmā bráhmaṇaḥ putrástotā́ kálpeṣu saṃmítā ||7||

With well-anointed limbs and eyes, wearing fair gem and golden,
ring,
Good priest is he, the Brāhman's son; these things are ordered
in the rules.

अ॒प्रपाणा॒ च वेशन्ता॒ रेवां॒ अ॒प्र॒तिदिश्ययः ।
अ॒यभ्या कन्या॑ कल्याणी॒ तोता॒ क॒ल्पेषु संमि॒ता ॥८॥

Pools with no place for drinking, and the wealthy man who.

Pools with good drinking places, and the wealthy man who
freely gives,

प॒रिवृक्ता॒ च म॒हिषी स्वस्त्या॑ च युधिं॒ गमः॒ ।
अ॒नाशुर॒श्चा॒यामी॒ तोता॒ क॒ल्पेषु संमि॒ता ॥१०॥

párivr̥ktā́ ca máhiṣī svastyā̀ ca yudhíṃ gamáḥ |
ánāśuráścā́yāmī́ totā́ kálpeṣu saṃmítā ||10||

The favourite wife neglected, and the man who safely shuns the
fight,
A sluggish horse whom none may guide, these things are order-
ed in the rules.

avś_20.128.11.

वावाता॒ च म॒हिषी स्वस्त्या॑ च युधिं॒ गमः॒ ।
श्वाशु॒रश् चायामी॒ तोता॒ क॒ल्पेषु संमि॒ता ॥११॥

vāvātā́ ca máhiṣī svastyā̀ ca yudhíṃ gamáḥ |
śvāśúraś cāyāmī́ totā́ kálpeṣu saṃmítā ||11||

The favourite wife most dearly loved, the man who safely goes
to war,
The fleet steed who obeys the rein, these things are ordered in
the rules.

avś_20.128.12.

य॒द् इन्द्रादो दाशराज्ञे॒ मा॒नुषं वि॒ गाहथाः ।
वि॒रूपः स॒र्वस्मा आसीत् सह॒ यक्षा॒य क॒ल्पते ॥१२॥

yád indrādo dāśarājñé mā́nuṣaṃ ví gāhathāḥ |
vírūpaḥ sárvasmā āsīt sahá yakṣā́ya kálpate ||12||

When, Indra, thou, as no man could, didst plunge into the Ten
Kings' fight,
That was a guard for every man: for he is formed to stay
disease.

avś_20.128.13.

त्वं॒ वृषाक्षुं॒ मघवन्न् अ॒म्रं मर्या॒क॒रो र॒विः ।
त्वं॒ रौहिणं॒ व्या॑स्यो वि॒ वृत्र॒स्या॒भिनच् छि॒रः ॥१३॥

tváṃ vr̥ṣākṣúṃ maghavann ámraṃ maryā́káro ráviḥ |
tváṃ rauhiṇáṃ vyā̀syo ví vr̥trásyā́bhinac chíraḥ ||13||

Easily conquering Maghavan, thou, Hero, bentest Raji down,
Rentest asunder Rauhina, calvest in pieces Vritra's head.

avś_20.128.14.

यः॒ प॒र्वतान् व्य॑दधाद् यो॒ अपो॒ व्यगाहथाः ।
इ॒न्द्रो यो॒ वृत्रहा॒न्महं॒ त॒स्माद् इन्द्र न॒मो ऽस्तु ते ॥१४॥

yáḥ párvatān vyàdadhād yó apó vyagāhathāḥ |
índro yó vr̥trahā́nmaháṃ tásmād indra námo 'stu te ||14||

Thou who didst separate the clouds and penetrate the water-
floods,
To thee, great slayer of the foe, be glory, Indra, yea, to thee!

avś_20.128.15.

पृष्ठं॒ धा॒वन्तं हर्यो॒र् औ॒च्चैः श्रवस॒म् अब्रुवन् ।
स्वस्त्य॒श्व जै॒त्राये॒न्द्रम् आ॒ वह सुस्र॒जम् ॥१५॥

pr̥ṣṭháṃ dhā́vantaṃ haryór áuccaiḥ śravasám abruvan |
svastyáśva jáitrāyéndram ā́ vaha susrájam ||15||

They said to Auchchaihsravasa running as side-horse of the
Bays,
Safely to victory, O Steed, bear Indra with the beauteous wreath.

avś_20.128.16.

ये॒ त्वा श्वेता॒ अ॒जैश्रवसो॒ हा॒र्यो युञ्ज॒न्ति द॒क्षिणम् ।
पू॒र्वा न॒मस्य देवा॒नां बि॒भ्रद् इन्द्र महीयते ॥१६॥

yé tvā śvetā́ ájaiśravasó hā́ryo yuñjánti dákṣiṇam |
pū́rvā námasya devā́nāṃ bíbhrad indra mahīyate ||16||

They yoke the white mares, on the Bay's right harness Auchchai-
hsravasa.
He joyeth as he carrieth Indra the foremost of the Gods.
