Here is the August 2026 edition of the Cologne Digital Sanskrit Dictionaries newsletter, covering the activity of the past month. Significant work this period: a complete literary-source overhaul of the Benfey dictionary, a second and much deeper security hardening pass across the web interfaces, a multi-dictionary endpoint for the new structured API, and the preface digitisation effort maturing from raw OCR into machine-readable abbreviation data.

The first half of 2026 brought the most visible changes to the CDSL project in years: a comprehensive new documentation site, preface texts for sixteen dictionaries, a new API layer, a new shared transcoding library, and sustained daily correction work — all alongside a programme of security hardening across every server-side codebase.

Two new things on the guides this cycle:
- a live side-by-side dictionary comparison — type one Sanskrit word and read its entry across Monier-Williams, Apte, Böhtlingk-Roth, and Grassmann at once, fetched live from the Cologne CDSL API, and
- a "Reading Monier-Williams" guide with 69 practice quizzes — the four levels of MW's alphabetical order, its symbols, and tracing a word to its dhātu, with self-check questions that link straight to live CDSL entries.

The CDSL guides now ship three substantial additions:
- an auto-generated dictionary catalog built from the live front page (so it can't drift from the real site),
- offline full-text search across the whole site, and
- B/L/A/M display screenshots captured from the live dictionaries (Monier-Williams in all four modes, plus Apte, Böhtlingk-Roth, and Grassmann for comparison).
