Abbreviations compared

Every Cologne dictionary cites the same body of Sanskrit literature and uses the same grammatical categories — but each prints its own abbreviations for them. Monier-Williams writes the Ṛgveda RV., Benfey Rigv., Vaidya R.V., the Petersburg dictionaries ṚV. This page lines those legends up against each other, and then lists each dictionary's full legend where it has been transcribed.

18 of 44 catalogued dictionaries have a machine-readable abbreviation legend transcribed here; 26 keep theirs in scanned front matter (linked below). Pilot: PWG and PW also show the preface legend store joined to body citation counts (697 keys).

The data is generated from the canonical abbreviation files in each dictionary's repository (see the source: link in every section below); it is not hand-authored. Where a dictionary's legend exists only as a scanned page, the section links to that front matter instead. See Abbreviations & Citations for how the <ls>, <ab> and <lex> markup tags carry these abbreviations inside an entry.

Literary sources, side by side

How each dictionary abbreviates the major cited works. Rows are ordered by how many dictionaries cite the work; click a column heading to jump to that dictionary's full list. A · means the work was not found in that dictionary's transcribed legend.

Tibetan citations chiefly from block-print in my possession, partly from WT. When my work was practically ready for print, my colleague Professor Rahder received, and lent to me, the photostatic reproduction of the ms. referred to by WT as Ḱ. It has been cited a very few times. The quotations from it in WT seem to be very inaccurate.
ŚsPŚatasāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā, ed. P. Ghoṣa, Bibliotheca Indica, Calcutta, 1902 ff.
SukhSukhāvatīvyūha (‘Larger’ and ‘Smaller’), ed. Müller, Oxford, 1883.
