Dictionary Catalog

The tables below are auto-generated from the live front page by scripts/build-catalog.mjs, which also cross-references the sanskrit-lexicon org repo list and the per-dictionary pages in csl-doc (the project's Sphinx "front matter / prefaces / user notes" reference). Re-run the script to refresh; nothing in the tables is hand-maintained, so it cannot drift. See Reconciliation with csl-doc for how the sources relate.

Codes are the website display codes. Where the GitHub repo is named differently it shows in the Repo column (e.g. MWMWS, AEApteES, PWPWK); a dash means no dedicated per-dictionary repo (the dictionary is still served from the site, with its text in csl-orig).

Reading the table
  • Click a code to open that dictionary's csl-orig source directory (the canonical plain-text source). 42 of the 43 have one — every dictionary except the PD sample.
  • Hover a dictionary name to see its full author/editor and descriptive title (and the Pp. column gives the print page count) — all from the front-page metadata.
Count — resolved

The front page states "The 42 dictionaries…", yet the table has 43 rows. The extra row is PD, shown as a sample only (marked *, "funded by the DFG-NEH Project 2010-2013"): it links to a pd-sample.php page and has no …Scan code and no B/L/A/M display. The HTML confirms exactly 42 distinct …Scan dictionary codes — the fully digitized dictionaries the headline counts — plus the PD sample = 43 rows. csl-doc documents 38 (no PD page, since there is no full dictionary to document).

Auto-generated from the live front page on 2026-06-18 by scripts/build-catalog.mjs. 43 fully digitized dictionaries (44 rows including the PD sample); 38 have a csl-doc page.

Open: B=Basic · L=List · A=Advanced · M=Mobile. Data: D=Downloads · S¹=PDF scan · S²=JPG scan. Greyed letters are not offered for that dictionary. A 📖 guide link marks dictionaries with a dedicated guide page in this site. Links to the live CDSL site, scans, and GitHub open in a new browser tab.

In preparation (not yet on the front page)

These dictionaries have repositories in the org but are not yet listed on the live front page (so they do not appear in the generated tables above). They include a Sanskrit–Russian language group the current front page does not represent.

RepoTitleAuthorYearLanguageStatus
AMARAmarakośa (Nāmaliṅgānuśāsana)AmarasiṃhaSA → SASource amar.txt built, bound for csl-orig/v02/amar/
KOWSanskrito-russkiy slovarKossowich1854SA → RU~13,488 entries; corrections/scans repo
KNASanskrit–Russian VocabularyKnauer1908SA → RU3,271 entries; corrections repo

Reconciliation with csl-doc

csl-doc is the project's existing Sphinx documentation site. Each dictionary has a source/dictionaries/{code}.rst page holding its front matter, prefaces, and user notes (the dictionary text itself lives in csl-orig, conventionally at csl-orig/v02/{code}/{code}.txt). The generated catalog's csl-doc column links each dictionary to its page where one exists. csl-doc's index.rst documents 38 dictionaries, all a subset of the 43 on the front page.

On the website but not in csl-doc (5):

CodeTitleHas org repo?
PDEncyclopedic Dictionary of Sanskrit on Historical PrinciplesNo (sample only)
FRIFriš Sanskrit Reader VocabularyYesFRI (repo but no csl-doc page)
ARMHAbhidhānaratnamālā of HalāyudhaNo
ACPHAbhidhānacintāmaṇipariśiṣṭaNo
ACSJAbhidhānacintāmaṇiśiloñchaNo

Of the four Abhidhāna texts, only ABCH has a csl-doc page (abch.rst); ARMH/ACPH/ACSJ have neither a repo nor a csl-doc page.

Resolved by reconciliation

  • Wilson vs Yatesseparate dictionaries. csl-doc has distinct wil.rst and yat.rst pages. WIL has its own repo; YAT has none (its corrections live in the shared Wil-YAT repo).
  • PW display code — confirmed by pw.rst ("Böhtlingk Sanskrit-Wörterbuch in kürzerer Fassung"); the repo is PWK.
  • Source location — now linked per row. Every dictionary except the PD sample (42 of 43) has its plain-text source under csl-orig/v02/{code}/; the generator verifies this and the table's code links straight to it. This includes the "unmigrated" dictionaries (GST, LAN, IEG, SNP, PE, PGN, MWE) and the Abhidhāna texts — none needs a dedicated per-dictionary repo to have a source.
  • GST covers only words beginning with a- (noted on its csl-doc page).
  • AMAR/KNA/KOW — not Abhidhāna texts; separate newer dictionaries (see In preparation). None has a csl-doc page yet.

Still open

  • csl-doc coverage gapsFRI has a repo but no csl-doc page; the three uncovered Abhidhāna texts (ARMH, ACPH, ACSJ) may also warrant pages. (PD does not — it is a sample only, see the Count note above.)
  • Publisher / place / edition statements — author, descriptive title, and page count are now surfaced (hover a name; see the Pp. column), all from the front-page metadata. The remaining bibliographic details — publisher, place of publication, edition — are not on the front page; they live in each dictionary's print front matter, transcribed on the csl-doc prefaces/ pages.
