Stchoupak, Nitti & Renou, Dictionnaire Sanskrit-Français (STC)
STC is the Dictionnaire Sanskrit-Français (1932) of Nadine Stchoupak, Luigia Nitti,
and Louis Renou — the standard French Sanskrit dictionary, published by the Institut de
Civilisation Indienne in Paris. Its preface notes it filled a real gap: until then
French students had only Burnouf & Leupol's slim 1866 Dictionnaire classique, while the
strong dictionaries were all in English and German. Glosses are in French.

When to use it
Reach for STC for precise French glosses from first-rate scholars — Louis Renou is among
the foremost 20th-century indologists. It complements:
- Monier-Williams (MW) — the broad English reference.
- Böhtlingk-Roth (PWG) — the deepest German treatment.

and type the headword; Advanced also searches inside entries. See
Search & Display.
Reading an entry
STC sets headwords and Sanskrit in {@…@} (bold, in IAST, with hyphens marking the stem and
affixes), italic cues in {%…%}, and tags abbreviations with <ab>; the glosses are plain
French. The entry a-ṛṇin- "free from debts" (csl-orig/v02/stc/stc.txt) — the same word the
Apte (AP90) page reads in English:
<L>3<pc>1,1<k1>afRin<k2>a-fRin
{@a-ṛṇin-@}¦ ({%a%} pour {%an%}) <ab>a.</ab> libre de dettes.
| In the source | Meaning |
|---|---|
<pc>1,1 | page-column reference (p. 1, col. 1) |
{@a-ṛṇin-@} | the headword, IAST — the trailing hyphen marks it as a stem (search key <k1> is SLP1) |
({%a%} pour {%an%}) | a note: the prefix is a- (here) but an- before a vowel |
<ab>a.</ab> | the grammatical label — adjectif |
libre de dettes | the French gloss ("free from debts") |
See Data Formats for the markup reference.
