Cappeller, Sanskrit-Wörterbuch (CCS)

CCS is Carl Cappeller's Sanskrit-Wörterbuch (1887), "nach den Petersburger Wörterbüchern bearbeitet" — a concise one-volume German Sanskrit dictionary distilled from the great Petersburg lexica (PWG / PW). It packs the essentials of Böhtlingk-Roth into ~541 pages of terse German glosses, and is the German twin of Cappeller's better-known English Sanskrit-English Dictionary (CAE, 1891).

CCS (this page) is Cappeller's German dictionary (1887). CAE is his Sanskrit→English Dictionary (1891) — the same compact scheme, also distilled from the Petersburg lexica, but glossed in English. Pick by the gloss language you want.

When to use it​

Reach for CCS when you want a quick German gloss without wading through the multi-volume Petersburg dictionaries it summarizes. It complements:

Looking up a word​

Open the Basic display, choose your input/output transliteration (see Encoding & Transliteration), and type the headword. The List and Advanced displays browse the index and search inside entries — see Search & Display.

Reading an entry​

Cappeller sets the Sanskrit in {#…#} and the grammatical labels / German cues in {%…%} (italic); the running glosses are plain German. The entry aṃśa (csl-orig/v02/ccs/ccs.txt):

What makes it distinctive​

  • A compact distillation of the Petersburg lexica. One German volume standing in for the multi-volume Böhtlingk-Roth — fast to consult, terse by design.
  • German, and accented. Glosses are in German; headwords carry the Vedic accent.
  • Has an English twin. Cappeller's CAE (1891) applies the same scheme in English.
